Common Questions
Getting Started
• “I’ve never done this before” – Perfect! – No experience needed and training is straightforward
• “What does the training actually involve?” – We hold a short onsite induction session before the slide opens for the season. We’ll email all the details to you once you’re signed up.
• “How far in advance do I need to book shifts?” – It’s great if you can choose your shifts when the calendar is released, as this helps us plan effectively. We may also send out urgent requests to fill last-minute shifts.
• “Can I bring my family/friends to watch?” – Absolutely! Even better, your children or grandchildren get to slide for free during your shift.
Time Commitment
• “I can only help occasionally” – That’s absolutely fine – even one shift helps enormously
• “What if I can’t make my scheduled shift?” – If you know someone who can replace you, that’s great! Otherwise, the Rotarian in charge of your shift will contact you beforehand and can assist with finding coverage.
• “Do I have to commit to the whole season?” – Not at all. One shift is appreciated if that’s all you can do.
Safety & Operations
• “What if something goes wrong?” – You’ll never be alone on shift and safety training covers everything
• “What happens in bad weather?” – When river height or bad weather forecasts pose safety concerns, we may cancel the slide for the day. We’ll notify everyone via email and social media.
• “Am I covered by insurance while volunteering?” – Yes, you’re fully covered.
• “What if a child gets injured?” – The Rotarian on your shift will manage any incidents and knows the proper procedures.
• “Do I need to know how to swim?” – No, you can be stationed at the ticket booth or controlling the top of the slide.
Practical Details
• “What should I wear/bring?” – Weather-appropriate clothes (noting it can get very hot on some days) and bring your own water bottle.
• “Is there parking available?” – While we don’t have allocated parking, there are parking areas close to the slide.
• “What if I have mobility issues?” – You may be able to work at the ticket booth. Let us know your needs and we’ll see how you can best assist.
• “Can teenagers volunteer?” – Volunteers must be over 18 years old.
Volunteer Experience
• “Will I be working alone?” – Never! There are always 3 people on each shift, including one experienced Rotarian.
